Sporttho / Our Writers

Our Writers

Seven people write and edit everything on Sporttho. Each has worked inside the sport they cover, as a player, analyst, engineer or scout.

CBCallum Brandt, Motorsport writer

Callum Brandt

Motorsport writer

Callum Brandt trained as a mechanical engineer and spent four years as a trackside data engineer in GT and prototype racing before he started writing. He covers Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship for Sporttho, with a focus on strategy modelling, tyre behaviour and the decisions made on the pit wall.

He lives in Oxfordshire, within an hour of most of the F1 grid's factories, and has attended every Le Mans 24 Hours since 2014. His race-week explainers are written so that a new fan can follow them and an engineer will not wince.

EWElena Whitford, Tennis correspondent

Elena Whitford

Tennis correspondent

Elena Whitford has reported from 27 Grand Slam tournaments and spends around thirty weeks a year on the road with the tours. A former college player at Stanford, she writes about patterns of play, court speed and the scheduling pressures that shape who is fresh in the second week of a major.

Before Sporttho she worked as a broadcast statistician, logging serve placement and rally length by hand from the commentary box. She is based in Barcelona, speaks Spanish and French, and argues at every opportunity that the grass season is too short.

JPJordan Pryce, Basketball editor

Jordan Pryce

Basketball editor

Jordan Pryce runs Sporttho's basketball desk from Chicago. He spent six years as a video coordinator and scout in the G League before moving into writing, and his work leans on that background: play diagrams, lineup data, and a habit of rewatching fourth quarters with the sound off.

Jordan covers the NBA regular season, the playoffs and the draft, with a side interest in how European offensive ideas travel across the Atlantic. He has a statistics degree from the University of Illinois and coaches a high-school summer league team.

MHMarcus Hale, Chief football writer

Marcus Hale

Chief football writer

Marcus Hale has covered English and European football for fourteen seasons, reporting from more than 600 matches across nine countries. Before joining Sporttho as its first staff writer he worked as a club analyst in the Championship, building opposition reports and set-piece plans, and he holds a UEFA B coaching licence.

His weekly column looks at one tactical trend and tests it against event data. Marcus grew up in Sheffield, played semi-professionally as a left-back until a knee injury at 23, and keeps a notebook of every corner routine he has seen work twice.

SLSophie Lindqvist, Athletics and Olympic sports writer

Sophie Lindqvist

Athletics and Olympic sports writer

Sophie Lindqvist is a former 800m runner who competed at two European under-23 championships before retiring to study sports physiology in Stockholm. She covers track and field, road running and the wider Olympic programme for Sporttho, with particular attention to training methods and the science behind fast times.

She has reported from two Olympic Games and four World Athletics Championships. Sophie still runs most mornings, holds a master's degree in exercise physiology, and writes Sporttho's championship-season event guides.

TATheo Ashworth, Cricket writer

Theo Ashworth

Cricket writer

Theo Ashworth played county second-eleven cricket as an opening batter before a decade in sports journalism. He covers Test series, white-ball tournaments and the franchise leagues for Sporttho, and is most at home explaining technique: why a trigger movement fails on a seaming pitch, or how a spinner changes pace without changing action.

Theo has reported on tours in Australia, the Caribbean, South Africa and New Zealand. He studied English at Leeds, scores every match he attends in a paper scorebook, and co-hosts Sporttho's monthly cricket audio show.

NCNora Castellan, Editor-in-chief

Nora Castellan

Editor-in-chief

Nora Castellan founded Sporttho after eleven years on national newspaper sports desks, where she edited coverage of three World Cups and two Olympic Games. She started as a sub-editor on the late shift, which is where she learned that most match reports explain what happened and very few explain why.

At Sporttho she sets the editorial line, commissions the long reads and has the final say on every correction. She studied modern history at Durham, coaches an under-12 girls' football team on Sunday mornings, and still believes a 600-word piece is harder to write than a 3,000-word one.
